A Conversation with Laurie Anderson & Tom Leeser
Laurie Anderson is a renowned American performance artist, composer and musician who plays violin and keyboards and sings in a variety of experimental music and art-rock styles. She is a pioneer in electronic music and has invented several devices that she has used in her recordings and performance art shows. Anderson will speak in conversation with Tom Leeser, co-leader for The Cosmos: Radical Cosmologies theme. Sponsored in part by AMP Concerts.

Public Dialogue: A Conversation with Prominent Brazilian artists and curators
For the ISEA2012 Latin American Forum, artist Giselle Beiguelman and curator Priscila Arantes, mediated by Simone Osthoff, will speak on the international art scene, offering the public a chance to see dynamic dialogues about contemporary media art from first-hand perspectives and experiences. Giselle Beiguelman guest juror of ISEA2012, is a new media artist and curator born and based in São Paulo, Brazil. She is Professor of the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo, in the the fields of Art History and Urban Culture. Priscila Arantes, Adjunct Director of MIS [Museum of Image and Sound] São Paulo, since 2010, the director of the Paço das Artes also in São Paulo, is a researcher and curator in the field of media art. Simone Osthoff is a Brazilian born artist and writer based in the U.S. since 1988. She is Associate Professor of Critical Studies in the School of Visual Arts at the Pennsylvania State University and the author of Performing the Archive: The Transformation of the Archive in Contemporary Art From Repository of Documents to Art Medium (Atropos Press, 2009).

Panel: Extinction
Artists Clare Patey (London) and Matt Moore (Phoenix) along with Arizona State University Art Museum Director Gordon Knox and Senior Curator Heather Sealy Lineberry discuss a new collaborative exhibition and initiative that explores fundamental changes occurring during our lifetimes and potential means of dealing with such changes culturally. This project explores both biological loss (the dramatic extinction of 90% of biodiversity) and cultural loss (letter writing, the practice of darning socks, or the loss of generational farming knowledge). ASU Art Museum‘s Knox and Lineberry moderate the discussion within the context of the evolving role of the museum in society from archive to agent of social change. Sponsored by ASU Art Museum.

Fritz Haeg: Animal Estates
Fritz Haeg’s work has included edible gardens, public dances, educational environments, animal architecture, domestic gatherings, urban parades, temporary encampments, documentary videos, publications, exhibitions, websites and occasionally buildings for people. For the Wildlife: Trans-Species Habitats theme, he speaks on his Animal Estates project, a housing initiative for native animals in cities around the world which debuted at the 2008 Whitney Biennial.

Mark Hosler: Adventures in Illegal Art: Creative Media Resistance and Negativland
Is Negativland a “band”? Media hoaxers? Activists? Musicians? Filmmakers? Decide for yourself in this presentation that uses films and stories to illustrate some of Negativland’s creative projects, hoaxes, pranks and “culture jamming”. Their work spans media literacy, audio and visual collage, creative activism in a media saturated multi-national world, file sharing, intellectual property issues, evolving notions of art and ownership and law in the digital age.

Jaromil: Bitcoin
Denis Roio, a.k.a. Jaromil, is a software developer, artist and activist of the network, Ph.D. researcher of the Planetary Collegium M-Node at NABA in Milan. Besides writing software distributed and used worldwide, he is researching complementary and alternative currency systems ( For the Creative Economies: Econotopias theme, he illustrates technical and political aspects connected to Bitcoin, a cryptographic commodity used to transfer value over the Internet without the need of any intermediary. Kwende Kefentse & Tahir Hemphill: Hip Hop & Technology
Since its emergence in the mid 1970s, Hip Hop culture and music have been transformed by technological innovations. Through the research of Tahir Hemphill, creator of the Hip-Hop Word Count: A Searchable Rap Almanac, an ethnographic database built from the lyrics of over 40,000 Hip Hop songs, users can analyze and track this evolving language. Kwende Kefentse’s focus on urbanization has led him to explore parallels between the emergence of Hip Hop culture and the built environment on a global scale.

Chip Lord of Ant Farm
For the Transportation: Dynamobilities theme, Chip Lord gives a lecture. Lord is an American digital media artist currently teaching at UC Santa Cruz. He is best known for his part in the Ant Farm Collective and the creation of Cadillac Ranch. Lord’s work intersects with a number of themes significant to Machine Wilderness including transportation, media and communication and land art. Roger Malina: Big Data, New Senses and the Avatar as Other in Cosmology
Roger Malina discusses the history of astronomy as a science and its symbiotic relationship with technology. Many aspects of the universe cannot be known about until the right technology is invented, as has been pointed out by many scholars about how we augment, extend and develop new senses. An epistemological revolution is under way with the arrival of the era of "big data', which has been rich for art-science collaborations. In his keynote talk, Malina addresses the nature of some of these collaborations. Roger Malina is an astrophysicist at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille CNRS in France, where he is a member of the Observational Cosmology Research Group involved in the study of dark matter and dark energy in the Universe. He currently serves as Interim Director of the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence and is a former Executive Director of the Center for EUV Astrophysics at UC Berkeley.

Nancy Marie Mithlo
Nancy Marie Mithlo (Chiricahua Apache) is an Associate Professor of Art History and American Indian studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches courses on Native American film, fine arts, visual representations and museum theory. Mithlo is a prolific scholar and curator, exploring the manner in which film, photography and media, as well as arts and material culture, are used to both produce and define ways of understanding.

Rick Prelinger: Accelerating Networks, Broken Networks
Rick Prelinger, keynote speaker for the Power: Gridlocked theme, is an archivist, writer, filmmaker and outsider librarian. He speaks about our dependency on the networks that connect us. He says “The networks offering power, water, mobility, commodities and communication have turned into a drunken spiderweb full of broken connections. All of us depend on networks that are growing unreliable. Identifying the utopian kernel that once resonated in our minds as these networks accelerated, is a starting place for examining nodes in emergent networks and our connectivity.”

Panel: Getting Off the Planet
This panel features artist collaborators Charles Lindsay and Eric Hanson who have created a digital video work of a morphing proto-world titled CARBON-X for the IAIA Dome in Santa Fe; and Scott Kildall with Nathaniel Stern who are facilitating the sending of Twitter messages at the ISEA2012 Gala toward an exoplanet 20 light years away. They address the role technology based artist practitioners can play in collaborations between the fields of astrophysics and art. Moderated by the co-curators of Getting Off the Planet, a multi-year site residency project curated by Patricia Watts and Jenée Misraje in partnership with the Santa Fe Art Institute.

Caroline Woolard
For the Creative Economies: Ecotopias theme, co-founder Caroline Woolard will give a talk about the problems and possibilities of non-monetary exchange. If resource sharing is a paradigm of the 21st century, how do we build trust and communicate effectively at intimate-distance? This talk will explore the subjectivities made (im)possible by alternative economies, both analog and digital. Culled from three years of research and development as a co-founder of and Trade School, two barter networks for cultural producers, Woolard's talk reflects upon a contemporary fumbling for sharing relationships. Caroline Woolard is a Brooklyn based, post-media artist exploring civic engagement and communitarianism. Her work is collaborative and often takes the form of sculptures, websites and workshops.

Curated by Parallel Studios, Currents: Santa Fe International New Media Festival explores the role of technology and the diverse applications of new media in the arts. This year’s festival showcases single channel video, video and sound installation, interactive new media, animation, computer modulated sculpture, multimedia performance, experimental and interactive documentary video, Digital Dome projection, art gaming and web art.

''Desert Haiku'' is a short film-poem designed as an intriguing ode to the soulful American Southwest. It explores the memory of the desert through the fusion of modern technology and ancient landscapes. Re-imagining mythologies based on personal experience, the film plays with the idea of morphic resonance, where the sublime meets the real, and worlds may collide and fuse in history-defying moments. Trade Winds Revival: Stopping and Staying

Friends of the Orphan Signs members Ellen Babcock and Jessamyn Lovell use the old Trade Winds Motor Hotel lot as the site for the outdoor projection of short videos solicited from the local public that respond to the theme of stopping and staying. These videos are projected onto four different channels along the long, white, east-facing wall of the Octopus Car Wash. Corresponding to four visual projections are soundtracks transmitted over different FM frequencies using FCC part 15 transmitters. The public isnvited to drive in, park and watch the programs. This looped program during the ISEA2012 Latin American Forum features a selection of videos from the Low Lives networked performance series, curated by Jorge Rojas, Founding Director of Low Lives. The program includes performance videos from over 30 international artists as they were streamed live. The themes they address are widely varied, but they all explore aspects of human and social makeup, and our relationship with technology. Artists include Annie Abrahams, Lukas Avendaño, Tzitzi Barrantes, Profesor Bazuco, Black & Jones, The Emerge Collective, Tutu-Marambá, Kristin Lucas, Marisol Salanova, Rosa Sanchez & Alain Baumann, Second Front, and Martin Zet among others.

Andrew Garrison: Trash Dance

Sometimes inspiration can be found in unexpected places. Choreographer Allison Orr finds beauty and grace in garbage trucks, and in the men and women who pick up our trash. Filmmaker Andrew Garrison follows Orr as she joins city sanitation workers on their daily routes to listen, learn and ultimately to convince them to collaborate in a unique dance performance. Hard working, often carrying a second job, their lives are already full with work, family and dreams of their own. But some step forward, and after months of rehearsal, two dozen trash collectors and their trucks perform an extraordinary spectacle. On an abandoned airport runway in Austin, Texas, thousands of people show up to see how a garbage truck can “dance.” Join filmmaker Andrew Garrison for a screening and Q&A.
